Industry Overview

What this work demands

When you source a defense component, the released drawing is only one part of the requirement. PO flowdowns, material pedigree, approved special processes, inspection evidence, controlled technical data, and final documentation all have to stay connected to the work. For recurring production and sustainment parts, the correct configuration and process route may need to be reproduced years after the original order.

Manufacturing requirements

  • Tight tolerance requirements and complex GD&T
  • Critical components and complex geometries
  • Build-to-print configuration control
  • Specified alloys and material conditions
  • Approved special-process sources
  • Repeatable production and sustainment

Quality expectations

  • Drawing- and PO-driven inspection
  • Material and process traceability
  • Revision and change control
  • First article documentation, when required
  • Nonconformance and corrective action
  • Contract-specific quality records

Project challenges

  • Complex flowdowns and quality clauses
  • Controlled data and access requirements
  • Outside-process and subtier coordination
  • Requalification after process changes
  • Long-lead materials and source approvals
  • Repeatability after production gaps

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Have questions? Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most often.

What military machining projects are a good fit for Total Manufacturing?

Total Manufacturing is best suited to produce components for military applications when the work combines tight tolerance requirements, difficult materials, multiple manufacturing steps, controlled technical data, or extensive quality documentation. Fit for critical components used in mission-critical defense systems must be confirmed against the drawing, contract flowdowns, required approvals, equipment, and inspection requirements. Parts associated with a weapon system or designated as critical safety items require contract-specific controls that must be reviewed before work is accepted.

Can Total Manufacturing coordinate multi-process defense components?

Yes. Total Manufacturing brings CNC milling and turning, grinding, wire and sinker EDM, welding, fabrication, finishing, and inspection together in one facility. When an outside special process is required, applicable source approvals, flowdowns, certifications, and traceability requirements can be identified during quoting so the production route is planned correctly.

How does Total Manufacturing support defense documentation and traceability requirements?

Total Manufacturing reviews the drawing, purchase order, customer quality clauses, and applicable flowdowns to establish the records required for each defense project. Depending on the program, these can include material and lot traceability, process certifications, dimensional inspection results, Certificates of Conformance, and first article documentation. Defining those requirements before production helps keep the necessary records connected to the job from material receipt through delivery.

Can Total Manufacturing support ITAR-controlled defense work?

Total Manufacturing is ITAR registered and holds DD Form 2345. These credentials support its eligibility to work with applicable defense articles and access certain DoD export-controlled technical data. Specific access, citizenship, data-handling, and cybersecurity requirements depend on the contract and program, so the applicable controls are reviewed before work begins.

What certifications and registrations does Total Manufacturing hold for defense work?

Total Manufacturing is ISO 9001:2015 certified, ITAR registered, holds DD Form 2345, and has CAGE Code 11LK4. Because defense qualification requirements vary by customer and contract, applicable source-approval, cybersecurity, and quality-system requirements should be confirmed during supplier qualification.
