Contract machining for custom machine builders

Total Manufacturing provides contract CNC machining services for machine bases, machined weldments, shafts, housings, precision plates, and other complex machine parts. Its integrated contract manufacturing approach coordinates CNC milling, turning, and other precision machining with fabrication, finishing, and inspection for low-to-medium-volume custom equipment builds.

Machine Builders
Industry Overview

What this work demands

When you source precision machined parts for a custom machine build, each component has to work within a larger mechanical system and arrive in time for assembly. Bearing bores, mounting patterns, datum relationships, machined weldments, surface finishes, and mating features have to be considered alongside part size, process sequence, inspection access, and the build schedule. A missed relationship can delay assembly even when the individual dimensions are within tolerance.

Manufacturing requirements

  • Tight tolerances and complex GD&T
  • Large parts and machined weldments
  • Assembly-critical bores and datums
  • Build-to-print revision control
  • Multi-process production routes
  • Low-volume and repeat-build flexibility

Quality expectations

  • Drawing-driven inspection
  • CMM and precision metrology
  • First-piece and in-process verification
  • Material and process certifications
  • Revision and change control
  • Required customer documentation

Project challenges

  • Parts that fail in assembly
  • Weld distortion and residual stress
  • Inaccessible machining or inspection features
  • Handoffs across specialized suppliers
  • Late ECOs and design changes
  • Critical parts delaying machine builds

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Have questions? Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most often.

How does Total Manufacturing handle drawing revisions and engineering changes?

Total Manufacturing controls production to released drawings and customer requirements. When an ECO, ECN, or other revision affects work in process, the team reviews the impact on material, routing, machining, inspection, cost, and delivery before the updated requirements move forward. Customer-specific approval and documentation requirements are followed as applicable.

Can Total Manufacturing support prototypes, low-volume builds, and repeat orders?

Yes. Total Manufacturing focuses on complex, low-to-medium-volume work, including one-off components, prototypes, small batches, recurring parts, and replacement needs. The same broad capability set supports the shift from an initial machine build to repeat orders without requiring the project to move to a different manufacturing partner.

How does Total Manufacturing support manufacturability and assembly fit?

Machine-builder engineers can work directly with Total Manufacturing’s production and technical teams during quoting and planning to review datums, bearing bores, mounting patterns, mating features, tolerance stacks, workholding, process sequence, and inspection access. Identifying these risks early helps prevent parts that meet isolated dimensions but create alignment or fit problems during assembly.

What contract machining services can Total Manufacturing coordinate for machine builders?

Total Manufacturing can coordinate milling, turning, grinding, wire and sinker EDM, waterjet cutting, welding, fabrication, finishing, and inspection through one Mentor facility. Keeping more of the manufacturing route with one team reduces supplier handoffs and makes it easier to manage process sequence, schedule, quality, and documentation.

Can Total Manufacturing machine large bases, frames, and weldments?

Yes. Total Manufacturing supports large-format components and machined fabrications with vertical and horizontal equipment offering work envelopes up to 96" × 200". Practical fit depends on the complete geometry, weight, workholding, tool access, tolerances, and inspection requirements, so the drawing and model should be reviewed during quoting.
